Inspired by a few sunset landscapes done by my high school students in response to a drawing project I
assigned them, I embraced a return towards more representational art. I was surprised and excited to
realize how much my “abstractionist” tendencies carried over into this new body of work. I found it
invigorating to look at reference images and interpret them into my abstractionist point of view. The
vibrant colors and depth of space from my more abstract work is still prevalent in this work, but the
knowledge of recognizing what you are looking helps bring a new accessibility to these abstract
landscapes.
